FAQs
GDE Access Issues for Pedestrians / Hikers & Cyclists
The Construction of GDE – Stage 2 will have impact on pedestrians and cyclists at various stages of the construction.
Media Releases and other communication packages will be prepared to advise the community on the details of closures and the impacts these will have on traffic as contracts are awarded and temporary traffic arrangements are finalised with the contractor.
The Stage 2 works (when completed) will provide 2.5 metre wide on-road cycle lanes in association with the road shoulders over the entire length of the main carriageway and adjoining ramps.
Off-Road Shared Paths - The off road shared path system in the vicinity of the GDE transport corridor is located away from this road in association with the actual urban areas. There are a number of grade separated crossings of the GDE which will remain unchanged by the Stage 2 works.

Proximity of GDE to Residential Areas
In Kaleen, the GDE is 75 metres from the closest back fence of houses on Pieman Crescent, and is 230 metres to the closest front yard on Gairdner Circuit.
In Aranda, the GDE pavement encroaches no further than the existing kerb on Caswell Drive, except at the bulge at the overpass bridge. The exit ramp is a minimum of 85 metres from fence lines in Aranda. The GDE through carriageways are a minimum of 95 metres from the residential fence lines.
GDE Noise Reduction Measures
Extensive noise abatement measures will be used along the route during the construction (and after the construction of GDE Stage 2). Consistent with the current measures, the installation of sound walls and mounds will be provided to mitigate plant and equipment noise during construction. Special road surfaces designed to minimise traffic noise will also be provided to ensure vehicle noise is minimised.
Noise reduction methods currently include:
- 4 metre earth mounds past Kaleen.
- Low noise pavement from Ginninderra Drive to south of Aranda.
- Concrete noise wall past the AIS.
- Transparent noise barrier on Belconnen Way Bridge (from just north of Bandjalong Crescent to meet with end of Belconnen Way bridge).
- During construction, dust emissions will be monitored and dust-minimisation measures implemented if necessary.
When will the GDE be finished
The project is now partially completed.
It is expected that the project will be fully completed with detailed landscaping due to be complete by June 2012.
