Gungahlin Drive Extension Stage 2

Design & Construction

The main through section has been designed for a posted speed limit of 80 kilometres per hour with the interchange ramps designed to achieve a posted 60 kilometres per hour.

The main features of the road cross section are:

  • 2 x 3.5 metre wide lanes in each direction
  • 2.5 metre left shoulder which is also an on-road cycle lane
  • 1.0 metre right shoulder
  • 1.0 metre verge

Bridges are designed to a SM1600 design load rating.

The construction of the GDE – Stage 2 has been broken in two stages to allow for the works to packages as progressed separately. These include:

  • Stage 2 (South) which covers the duplication of GDE south of Belconnen Way to the Glenloch Interchange;
  • Stage 2 (North) which covers the duplication of the GDE north of Belconnen Way to the Barton Highway.

Work would commence initially on Stage 2 (South), followed by Stage 2 (North). The main features of the Glenloch Interchange and adjoining Stage 2 (South) roads are:

  1. The creation of a strong and direct connection of the existing Tuggeranong Parkway and the Caswell Drive section of the GDE route;
  2. Better management of the traffic weaving issues between Glenloch and Lakeside Interchanges through the introduction of additional lanes;
  3. Construction of two new bridges on the main carriageway and an additional cycleway underpass on the West Belconnen ramp;
  4. Further improvements to the on-road cycle lanes through the interchange;
  5. Demolition of the existing 30 year old Bridge 1167.
  6. Removal of redundant pavements and landscape improvements to these previously disturbed areas;
  7. Completion of Stage 2 (South) works must be undertaken within the existing Stage 1 construction fencing to avoid disturbing any of the sensitive environmental areas which adjoin the interchange.

Stage 2 (North) works may be further staged given the number of bridge structures involved and this will be confirmed during the design process.

The main features of the Stage 2 (North) roads packages are:

  1. Construction of the southbound bridge over the Barton Highway;
  2. Construction of a new southbound 2-lane carriageway from Barton Highway to Ginninderra Drive;
  3. Duplication of the super tee overpasses at Ellenborough Street and Ginninderra Drive plus a pre-cast concrete arch fauna underpass at Lyneham Ridge;
  4. Additional lanes north and south bound carriageways between Ginninderra Drive and Belconnen Way;
  5. Duplication of Belconnen Way overpass;
  6. Duplication of the road works from Belconnen Way through to the Aranda flora underpass.

The project has been partially completed.
