Gungahlin Drive Extension Stage 2

About the Project

The Gungahlin Drive Extension (GDE) Stage 2 Route

The Gungahlin Drive Stage 2 completes the duplication of the 9 kilometre arterial road linking the Barton Highway to the Tuggeranong Parkway at Glenloch Interchange. The road passes through the four discrete regions including:

  1. The Kaleen Precinct
  2. Bruce Precinct
  3. Aranda Precinct and
  4. Glenloch Precinct

Kaleen Precinct

The GDE Stage 2 will further facilitate travel for Kaleen residents to and from Woden and Tuggeranong. It will ease traffic congestion on Baldwin and Haydon Drives.

Bruce Precinct

This section of the GDE Stage 2 passes over Ginninderra Drive and to the east of the Australian Institute of Sport (AIS), the Canberra Institute of Technology (CIT) and Calvary Hospital.

Aranda Precinct

The GDE has been constructed in a cutting below the existing Caswell Drive and moved on average 40 metres inside the existing Black Mountain Reserve in the vicinity of Aranda. The road passes over Belconnen Way with a single point intersection between Gungahlin Drive Extension and Belconnen Way, Caswell Drive (and adjacent to Aranda). An overpass providing linkages between Caswell Drive and GDE and allows pedestrian and cyclist access to Black Mountain Reserve. This linkage provides access for residents of east Aranda into and out of Aranda.

Glenloch Precinct

The design at Glenloch Interchange, with the direct link from GDE to the Tuggeranong Parkway, does not include a right hand turn from GDE heading south onto William Hovell Drive, as this is currently seldom used by traffic.
